A club named after a promise.
Besa Country Club was founded in 1961 by a small group of members who wanted a course, and a club, run on a single old idea: that a word given is a word kept — no fine print required.
Why "Besa"?
Besa is an Albanian concept, older than the country's borders — a personal pledge so binding that historically, breaking it cost a family its standing for generations. It has no single English equivalent; the nearest is "word of honor," but that undersells it. A besa isn't a promise you try to keep. It's one you have already kept, the moment you gave it.
Our founders — several of them children of Albanian immigrants — borrowed the word because it described something they already loved about golf: it is the rare sport where the players officiate themselves. You call your own out-of-bounds. You count your own strokes. The whole system runs on besa, whether the players know the word or not. We just decided to say it out loud.

"This club shall be governed first by the rules of golf, and second by its bylaws — and in any dispute between a member's convenience and a member's word, the word shall prevail."
The charter still hangs, framed, in the clubhouse hallway outside the Grand Room.
How the club grew.
Fairway Ridge is purchased
Eleven founding families acquire 262 acres of ridge and lowland farmland outside Highland Vale, and commission the original eighteen-hole routing.
The clubhouse opens
A modest fieldstone clubhouse opens with a dining room, locker rooms, and the Grand Room, still the site of the club's annual meeting.
The back nine is rerouted
Holes 10 through 18 are redesigned to make full use of the ridge's elevation change, including the addition of the par-5 12th through the pines.
First Besa Invitational
The club's flagship member-guest tournament is held for the first time, decided on the 5th hole in a playoff still discussed at the bar today.
Junior Academy founded
A dedicated junior golf program launches, pairing member families with instruction, its own short course, and a code of conduct written by the juniors themselves.
Sixtieth anniversary restoration
Greens and bunkering across all eighteen holes are restored to sharpen the original 1961 routing while modernizing drainage and irrigation.

Adrian Kastrioti
Twenty-two years in private club management, the last nine at Besa. Oversees clubhouse operations, staff, and the member calendar.
Marisol Weaver, PGA
Runs the pro shop, instruction program, and tournament operations. A former Division I collegiate golfer and thirteen-year club professional.
Owen Bellard
Leads the grounds crew responsible for course conditioning across all 262 acres, and the club's ongoing native-turf conservation program.
